What is the ERG Platform

The Emirati Reference Genome Programme (ERGP) is a single consensus-based genomic blueprint that represents the genetic diversity of the Emirati population. The platform is an advanced variant query system utilizing the ERG to highlight genetic variants unique to the Emirati population. This includes reference and alternate bases, population allele frequencies, clinical implications of disease-causing variants along with their functional annotation.

The Value of This Programme

• It represents a crucial and initial step towards the adaptation of precision medicine based on personal genomics in the UAE and the region.
• Serves as a benchmark for studying genetic variation within a population. It helps researchers in identifying common genetic sequences and variations, aiding in understanding how genes contribute to traits and diseases.
• Aids in finding genetic mutations and variations linked to diseases, an essential aspect for unraveling the genetic etiology of illnesses and developing a path towards targeted therapies or individualized medicine strategies.

The Role of DoH

• The Department of Health (DoH) played a key role in the Emirati Reference Genome Programme, collaborating with Khalifa University (KU) and M42, along with other organizations, to refine and shape the assembly methodology for the ERGP.
• The Department of Health (DoH) will serve as the host for this valuable platform.

We advise researchers and clinicians within the country to make use of the ERGP platform by examining the Emirati genome. This approach will enable more precise diagnoses and tailored therapies for the community, positioning the UAE prominently on the global genomic map.
