Hajj Vaccination Program in 2012
24 Sep, 2012: Abu Dhabi – The Health Authority – Abu Dhabi (HAAD), the regulatory body of the healthcare sector in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, announced today in a joint press conference with Abu Dhabi Health Services Company “SEHA” and the General Authority of Islamic Affairs and Endowments (AWQAF) the vaccine requirements for participation in Hajj in 1433 Hijri; Gregorian year (2012).
The list of mandatory vaccines for 2012 includes, quadruple meningococcal vaccine which protects against meningitis and the seasonal influenza (flu) vaccine. In addition, it is advisable to take pneumococcal vaccine which protect against pneumococcal diseases for adults with high risk of getting the disease. This includes adults aged 65 years and above. Added to that, younger adults who have chronic diseases like diabetes, heart diseases (except high blood pressure), lung diseases (including asthma), liver diseases, and kidney diseases. In addition, people who have damaged spleen or their spleen has been removed and people who have weakened immune system.
Dr. Farida Al Hosani, Manager of Communicable Diseases Department, said: “There are two types of quadruple meningococcal vaccine. One type can be given to all people starting from age 9 months to 55 years. The other type should be given to adults, older than 55 years”.
Every year, many people travel from different parts of the world to perform Hajj. Due to the overcrowding of pilgrims, and their close proximity to each other, germs can be easily spread and cause infectious diseases, including the bacteria which cause meningitis, and viruses that cause flu. Therefore, it is important for the pilgrims to take the required and recommended vaccines, to ensure their protection against common infectious disseises.
Dr. Farida Al Hosani added: “In addition to taking the required vaccines, it is advisable for people who are travelling for Hajj to visit the doctor earlier before travelling day (4 to 6 weeks). This would help them to know the list of vaccine/s that every one might need, to make sure if the person needs to take additional doses from a vaccine he/ she took before, and to educate the person according to his / her own health status.
HAAD emphasized on the importance of taking the vaccines ahead of time at least two weeks prior to travelling date, to ensure the effectiveness of the vaccines in providing the immunity and the maximum protection against the disease. HAAD also emphasized on the importance of taking a valid stamped vaccine certificate from the healthcare facility where the pilgrim takes the vaccines.
Dr. Farida Al Hosani said: “HAAD has approved a number of healthcare facilities to provide Hajj vaccination in this year 2012 in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. There are 16 healthcare facilities to provide Hajj vaccination in Abu Dhabi and Middle Region, 14 in the Eastern Region and 7 in the Western Region.”
The Health Authority – Abu Dhabi will distribute educational materials about Hajj vaccination and important recommendations to be followed by the pilgrims to all healthcare facilities in Abu Dhabi and to the General Authority of Islamic Affairs and Endowments (AWQAF).
