13 Oct, 2022:

During GITEX Global Week 2022, the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi (DoH), the regulator of the healthcare sector in the Emirate, signed a Declaration of Collaboration with AbbVie Biopharmaceuticals GMBH.

Signed by HE Dr. Jamal Mohammed Al Kaabi, Undersecretary of DoH and Hassan Sabbah, General Manager Abbvie Gulf, the joint agreement puts forward a collaboration plan between the two entities focused on three key pillars: research and clinical trials, innovation and health technology assessment, AbbVie manufacturing in Abu Dhabi and medical education. Through this joint agreement, DoH aims to reinforce Abu Dhabi’s position as a life sciences hub by enhancing innovation, healthcare services and treatments available to patients in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.

Some of the highlights under the three pillars of collaboration include increasing the number and quality of clinical trials in Abu Dhabi, exploring opportunities to conduct early phase clinical trials, showcasing innovative healthcare solutions in Abu Dhabi, testing and further developing solutions by healthcare innovators in Abu Dhabi, exploring the potential of local manufacturing and secondary packaging of AbbVie products, supporting Abu Dhabi in building its life sciences capabilities by exploring opportunities to develop, test, adopt and manufacture new drugs, therapeutics and technologies and educational collaborations to establish centres of excellence across different therapy areas.

HE Dr. Jamal Mohammed Al Kaabi, Undersecretary of DoH, said: “Under the directives of the UAE’s wise leadership, Abu Dhabi has successfully consolidated its position as the destination of choice to some the world’s most distinguished biopharmaceutical and healthcare companies as they advance their business in healthcare and expand operations. Today, the Emirate leads a pioneering healthcare model equipped with an advanced infrastructure in line with best international standards and practices - in addition to innovative logistical capabilities and smart information exchange tools that make Abu Dhabi an ideal destination for global healthcare players.”

HE Dr. Al Kaabi, added: “DoH is excited to partner with AbbVie Biopharmaceuticals and we look forward to making great strides together in the areas of healthcare innovation, services and treatments available to patients in Abu Dhabi and the world. Our partnerships are a reflection of DoH’s continuous efforts in reiterating Abu Dhabi’s position as a life sciences hub and a leading healthcare destination in the region.”

Hassan Sabbah, General Manager Abbvie Gulf, said: “Today I am pleased to announce the Declaration of Collaboration signing with Abu Dhabi Department of Health, an important partner and stakeholder. We look forward to seeing the benefits of this partnership in the near future.”
