Department of Health - Abu Dhabi launches robust healthcare emergency and disaster management program

4 Dec, 2019: The training will help 3,000 doctors and admin staff enhance their emergency response capabilities
The Department of Health - Abu Dhabi (DoH), the regulator of the healthcare sector in the Emirate, has adopted an integrated approach to help mitigate healthcare emergencies and disasters within the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. This primarily includes a robust training program, which seeks to train 3,000 nominated staff including doctors and administrative personnel from across all stakeholders in the healthcare sector, aiming to enhance their emergency preparedness capabilities and ensure that they are ready to effectively deal with all major health and mass casualty incidents.

The healthcare emergency and disaster management capability development program is set to be implemented in coordination with Prometheus Medical MENA, and will run over the course of an 18-month period.

Participants set to take part in the training program from across all stakeholders in the healthcare sector including; Abu Dhabi Health Services Company (SEHA), Mubadala Healthcare, Abu Dhabi Police General Headquarters, General Administration of Civil Defence - Abu Dhabi, National Emergency and Crisis and Disasters Management Authority, Armed Forces Medical Services, and Medical Services Division of Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC).

The scope of program includes a third-tier simulation exercise which will test organizational and process capability to respond to incidents including the ability of casualty evacuation, integrating the pre-hospital, in-hospital and post casualty care phases and operational readiness at an individual and organizational level.  The program will also facilitate knowledge transfer by selecting and educating health care providers to successfully continue to build on the foundations of training provided whilst also identifying personnel with the potential to be future instructors.

H.E Matar Saeed Al Nuiami, Director, EDM division – DoH, said: "Maintaining a comprehensive approach for high level healthcare emergency preparedness in the Emirate is at the forefront of DoH's priorities.  We are pleased to be working with Prometheus Medical MENA to help launch the healthcare emergency and disaster management capability development program, which provides a supportive environment for trainees and grants them access to specialised training courses and exercises for dealing with all aspects of emergencies. The program will also be crucial to enhancing communication and trust amongst all stakeholders."

Dr. Mamoum Abu-Habsa, CEO of Prometheus Medical MENA commented: "We are honored to be working with the Department of Health - Abu Dhabi as a strategic partner to support capability development in the emergency preparedness domain. We have been working on establishing a feasible and effective scope that fulfils and exceeds the aspirations of DoH and aligns with its commitment to ensure that all healthcare facilities in the Emirate effectively respond to all emergencies at all times."

Through the program, DoH will lay foundation for a comprehensive and integrated policy to establish a training center for emergencies and disaster management, complete with all necessary equipment, systems and staff.
