Emergency Departments in Abu Dhabi

The Department of Health—Abu Dhabi, began implementing a new standard for healthcare facilities’ emergency departments in Abu Dhabi. According to the new standard, emergency departments will be classified into two distinct departments, which are Emergency Departments and Urgent Care Centres.

What is the difference between them?

Emergency Departments

The Emergency Department will be responsible for providing critical care to patients with acute, life-threatening conditions. These facilities will be led by qualified emergency physicians supported by a full team of specialists, using state-of-the-art equipment used for emergency resuscitation, surgery, and 24/7 access to intensive care facilities.

Patients suffering from acute, life-threatening conditions should head to Emergency Care Department, in the case of:

  • severe chest pain
  • breathing difficulties
  • loss of consciousness
  • heavy blood loss
  • serious injury
  • severe burn
  • suspected stroke

Emergency departments are available in licensed private and public healthcare facilities, which includes Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City (SSMC) , Sheikh Khalifa Medical City, Tawam Hospital, Madinat Zayed Hospital, Al Ain Hospital, and NMC Royal Hospital

Urgent Care Centres

Urgent Care Centers will provide, as a minimum the initial check-up, stabilization, diagnostic, treatment and/or referral as appropriate. These centers will also be available in all public and private medical centers and hospitals in the Emirate on a walk-in basis and operational around-the-clock.

Patients with minor illnesses and injuries can attend Urgent Care Centers, in the case of:

  • a minor illness or injury
  • Strains
  • Sprains
  • Stitches
  • cuts
  • Bites
  • sever sunburn
  • Rashes

With the new standard for emergency departments in healthcare facilities set in place, patients can gain access to world-class emergency services in Abu Dhabi that aligns with international highest standards of quality and safety. This will help elevate patient experience and facilitate access to appropriate emergency care unit based on the medical emergency.
